Before you book a driving instructor in Christchurch
Anyone who teaches driving for payment must hold a driving instructor endorsement on their own licence under the Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Rule 1999, so ask to see proof of it before the first lesson. A one-hour lesson costs $80 to $100 at the four schools we checked, and AA members pay less. Work and Income can put you in touch with providers who help with lessons, test fees and a car for the test, and you do not have to be on a benefit to ask. The car licence rules are changing from 25 January 2027, and drive.govt.nz has the current steps.
The questions below are drawn from 762 customer reviews collected for this page.
How much do driving lessons cost in New Zealand, and is there help with the cost?
Based on published prices from schools, a one-hour car lesson runs from $80 to $100, with Safer Driving in Christchurch priced at $80 and Alert in Auckland at $100. Prepaid packages can reduce that rate, such as five lessons for $360 at Safer Driving, which works out to $72 a lesson.
AA Driving School charges $90 a lesson or $75 for AA members, and a Youth Membership for those 19 and under costs $50 a year and saves $15 per lesson. Work and Income can connect people with providers who help cover lessons, test fees, and a car for the test, and you do not need to be receiving a benefit to ask.
Does a driving instructor need a licence, and how do I check?
Under the Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Rule 1999, anyone who teaches driving for payment on a road must hold a driving instructor endorsement for the relevant vehicle class, such as an I1 endorsement for cars. Getting that endorsement requires holding a full New Zealand licence of the relevant class for at least two years, completing an approved course, passing a full licence test, providing a medical certificate, and passing a fit and proper person check.
The New Zealand Transport Agency's learner site, drive.govt.nz, advises asking the instructor to show proof of a current endorsement before your first session. A parent or friend who holds a full New Zealand licence held for at least two years can supervise a learner at no charge, but they are not permitted to charge for that supervision.
How many driving lessons will I need, and how do I choose an instructor?
Drive.govt.nz suggests two or three professional sessions at the start, a few check-ins as you progress, and a final lesson to prepare for the test, with supervised practice at home in between, but the number will depend on your starting confidence and how much private practice you do. Reviewers highlight patience with nervous drivers as the single most valued quality, and instructors who give clear written feedback after each lesson help learners keep improving between paid sessions. Choosing an instructor who knows the roads near your testing centre, will give you an honest read of when you are ready, and teaches in a dual-control car gives you the best chance of passing without wasting money on unnecessary lessons.
What are the warning signs of a driving instructor you should avoid?
- –An instructor who cannot or will not show you a current driving instructor endorsement before the first lesson.
- –Lessons that start late, finish early, or are cancelled at short notice with no reasonable notice or goodwill shown when you are the one who needs to cancel due to illness.
- –An instructor who is distracted during the lesson, whether on a phone or otherwise not focused on your driving.
- –Pressure to prepay a large package upfront with no clear refund policy for unused lessons.
- –Being told to book more lessons before attempting the test, with no specific feedback explaining what you need to improve.
- –A manner that is rude, dismissive, or that increases a nervous learner's anxiety rather than building their confidence.
What should you ask before booking driving lessons?
- –Can you show proof of a current driving instructor endorsement before we start?
- –Is the car fitted with dual controls, and is it manual or automatic?
- –What does an hour cost, is there a package price, and what happens to unused lessons if I prepay?
- –What is your cancellation policy, including short-notice cancellations on both sides?
- –Can I use your car for the practical test, and if so, what does that cost?
- –Do you pick up from home, school, or work, or do I need to meet you somewhere?
- –Do you have experience teaching nervous drivers, older learners, or people converting an overseas licence?
- –Will I have the same instructor for every lesson?

About this ranking
What the 10 driving instructors listed above hold, at the 31 October 2026 check.
How are the top driving instructors in Christchurch chosen?
We build this page from Google Maps results for driving instructors in Christchurch. Each one is scored on its public rating and review record, using the same published method on every page. Businesses outside the area, or whose reviews describe a different line of work, are left out. Every category and city is rechecked on a rolling cycle, about every two to three months. See how we rank for how rankings are made and who is left out. On specialist pages like this one, a business's reviews count in proportion to how many of them are about driving instructors, so a business mostly reviewed for other work cannot win on review volume alone. See the words we look for.
Are you a driving instructor in Christchurch?
No business can pay for a place in these rankings. Claiming and verifying your listing is free: it adds a small trust bonus (+3 points) to your score, for confirming a real operator stands behind the listing, and gives you a dashboard showing how your score is made up. A paid subscription adds a website link, a profile page and your ranking history. Claim your listing or see what a subscription includes.
Not listed? The usual reasons are a Google Business category that does not match, too few reviews to score near the top, or an address outside the area we cover. Check where you rank first, and if you think we missed you, get in touch.
