Before you book
No statutory cooling-off period applies to a venue or catering booking, so get the price, what it includes, the deposit and the cancellation terms in writing before you pay anything. The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 still protects you, and neither a venue nor a hire company can contract out of it for a private booking. Every caterer must operate under a Food Control Plan or National Programme registered under the Food Act 2014, which you can check on the Ministry for Primary Industries public register. If alcohol is served, ask which licence covers it: the venue's on-licence, a caterer's endorsed licence or a special licence.
