We build each category page from Google Maps results for that category in Wellington, then score every business on its public rating and review record. Businesses outside the area are left out, and so is a business whose Google profile does not list the category and whose reviews describe a different line of work. A business needs a Google rating of at least 4.0 and at least 3 reviews before it is assessed at all. Beyond that, each category has its own floor: the smallest review count among the businesses listed there. At each category's last update the lowest floor in Wellington was 3 reviews (employment lawyers) and the highest was 199 (mechanics); the median across all 65 categories was 25. Review count is one of six scoring signals and counts on a logarithmic scale, so a bigger total does not simply win. See what else counts.

Rankings cover businesses based within 40 km of the centre of Wellington, which takes in 156 named suburbs and localities. The filter uses the location on each business's Google listing, so a firm that serves the region from a base outside it is not listed.
