Window tinting a standard car runs from $150 to $300 with basic dyed film, up to $500 with hybrid or metalised film, and $500 to $800 or more with ceramic or infrared-rejecting film, with SUVs and vans costing more. A full colour-change wrap starts at $3,000 for a compact car, $3,500 for a sedan, $4,000 for a hatchback or small SUV, $5,000 for a full-size SUV, and $8,000 or more for a premium or custom-printed wrap.
Paint protection film starts at $1,200 for the bonnet alone, $2,700 for the full front including bumper, bonnet and guards, and $7,200 or more to cover every painted panel except the roof on a standard vehicle, with large SUVs quoted after inspection. Vehicle size and shape, the grade of film chosen, and how much of the car is covered drive the final price, and these are installer-published figures whose sources do not say whether GST is included.
What are the legal window tint limits in New Zealand, and does a wrap affect your registration? expand_more
The New Zealand Transport Agency Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual (VIRM) sets the tint limits that a Warrant of Fitness inspector applies, and they measure overall visible light transmittance through the glass and film together, with a 5% tolerance allowed on the reading. No film may be fitted to the windscreen except a transparent anti-glare band along the top edge that does not extend below the folded sun visors, and front side windows must let through at least 35% of light.
On a passenger car, rear and rear side windows must also stay at 35% or above and may only carry film if external mirrors are fitted on both sides, while vans and utes have no minimum VLT behind the driver's seat provided both external mirrors are present. Ask your installer for the finished reading on the glass itself, because a film rated at 35% will measure lower once applied to factory glass, and any film that has a mirrored effect that could dazzle other drivers, or that has bubbled, will cause a WoF failure.
There is no licence or registration scheme for tinters or wrap installers in New Zealand. If a wrap changes your car's predominant colour, the car's colour is recorded on the Motor Vehicle Register, and New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) form MR16 is how you update those details.

Tint is the right choice if your priority is cutting heat, glare and UV inside the car or gaining privacy, but how dark you can go is set by the WoF rules described above. A wrap makes sense when you want to change the colour or carry printed branding and want the option to remove it later, though most premium vinyl wraps last around 2 to 4 years depending on exposure, material quality and maintenance.
Paint protection film is a thicker, usually clear film that absorbs stone chips and light scratches instead of your paint, with installers warranting it for up to 10 years against yellowing, cracking and peeling and quoting a service life of 5 to 7 years or more, and most owners protect only the front of the car where road damage actually happens.
