No film may be fitted to a windscreen except a transparent anti-glare band along the top edge that does not extend below the folded-down sun visors, front side windows must let through at least 35% of light, and on a passenger car the rear and rear side windows must also sit at 35% or above and can only carry film if external mirrors are fitted on both sides; vans and utes have no minimum VLT behind the driver's seat provided both external mirrors are fitted.
Ask for the finished VLT reading once the film is on the glass, because a film rated at 35% will measure lower on the actual window and the reading that counts at a WoF inspection is the combined one. There is no licensing scheme for tinters or wrap installers in New Zealand, and if a wrap changes your car's main colour you can update the Motor Vehicle Register using NZTA form MR16, which asks you to select the closest basic colour.
