Window tinting on a standard car runs from $150 to $300 with basic dyed film, rising to $300 to $500 with hybrid or metalised film, and $500 to $800 or more with ceramic film, with larger vehicles costing more. A full colour-change wrap starts at $3,000 for a compact car, $3,500 for a sedan, $4,000 for a hatchback or small SUV, and $5,000 or more for a full-size SUV, climbing to $8,000 or above for a premium or custom-printed wrap.
Paint protection film starts at $1,200 for the bonnet alone, $2,700 for the front package covering the bumper, bonnet and front guards, and up to $7,200 for every painted panel except the roof on a standard vehicle, with large SUVs quoted after inspection. Vehicle size and shape, the grade of film chosen, and how much of the car is covered are what drive the final price, and these are installer-published figures whose sources do not state whether GST is included.
What are the legal window tint limits in New Zealand, and does a wrap affect your registration? expand_more
The limits come from the NZTA Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual (VIRM), which is what a Warrant of Fitness inspector applies, and they measure overall visible light transmittance (VLT) through the glass and film together, with a 5% tolerance allowed for variation. No film may be fitted to the windscreen except a transparent anti-glare band along the top edge that does not extend below the folded sun visors, front side windows must read at least 35% VLT, and on a passenger car the rear and rear side windows must also stay at 35% or above and may carry film only if external mirrors are fitted on both sides.
Vans and utes have no minimum VLT for film fitted behind the driver, provided both external mirrors are present, and on any vehicle the film must not produce a mirrored effect that could dazzle other drivers or bubble in a way that impairs vision. Because factory glass already absorbs some light, a film rated at 35% will measure lower once it is on the glass, so always ask the installer for the finished combined reading, not just the film rating.
A vehicle's colour is recorded on the Motor Vehicle Register, and if a wrap changes the car's main colour, NZTA form MR16 is how you update those details with the closest matching basic colour on the form. There is no licence or registration scheme for window tinters or vehicle wrap installers in New Zealand.

Tint is the right choice if your priority is cutting heat, glare and UV inside the cabin or adding privacy, but how dark it can go is set by the WoF rules described above, so a reputable installer will check the finished reading with a meter. A wrap changes the car's colour or carries printed branding and can be removed later, with most premium vinyl wraps lasting 2 to 4 years depending on exposure, material quality and maintenance, according to Auckland wrap installers. Paint protection film is a thicker, clear film that absorbs stone chips and light scratches in place of the paint, with installers noting it is most often applied to the front of the car where the damage happens, warranted by some for 10 years against yellowing, cracking and delamination, and expected to last 5 to 7 years or more depending on the product and application.
