Before you book a driving instructor on the North Shore
Anyone who teaches driving for payment must hold a driving instructor endorsement on their own licence under the Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Rule 1999, so ask to see proof of it before the first lesson. A one-hour lesson costs $80 to $100 at the four schools we checked, and AA members pay less. Work and Income can put you in touch with providers who help with lessons, test fees and a car for the test, and you do not have to be on a benefit to ask. The car licence rules are changing from 25 January 2027, and drive.govt.nz has the current steps.
The questions below are drawn from 420 customer reviews collected for this page.
How much do driving lessons cost in New Zealand, and is there help with the cost?
Based on published prices from driving schools, a one-hour lesson runs from $80 at some schools to $100 at Auckland providers like Alert Driving School. AA Driving School charges $90 per lesson, but AA members pay $75, and a Youth Membership ($50 a year for those 19 and under) saves $15 per lesson.
Prepaid packages lower the hourly rate: Safer Driving in Christchurch charges $360 for five lessons, which works out to $72 each. Using the instructor's car for the practical test usually costs extra, with Alert charging $200 for that service. Work and Income can connect people with providers who help cover lesson costs, test fees, and a car for the test, and you do not need to be receiving a benefit to ask.
Does a driving instructor need a licence, and how do I check?
Under the Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Rule 1999, anyone who charges money to teach driving on a road must hold a driving instructor endorsement for the relevant licence class. For car instruction, that endorsement is an I1, issued by the Director of Land Transport, and it requires the instructor to have held a full New Zealand licence for at least two years, completed an approved training course, passed a medical certificate, and cleared a fit and proper person check.
The New Zealand Transport Agency's learner site, drive.govt.nz, advises asking the instructor to show proof of a current endorsement before your first lesson. A parent or friend with a full licence held for at least two years can supervise a learner at no cost, but they do not need an endorsement because they are not charging for instruction.
How many driving lessons will I need, and how do I choose an instructor?
The number of lessons you need depends on your starting point and how much supervised practice you do between sessions. Drive.govt.nz suggests two or three professional lessons early on, a few check-ins as you progress, and a final session to sharpen up before your test. Reviewers repeatedly flag patience with nervous drivers, honest feedback after each session, and practice on the roads near the actual testing centre as the factors that made the clearest difference to their result.
What are the warning signs of a driving instructor you should avoid?
- –An instructor who cannot show a current driving instructor endorsement when you ask before the first lesson.
- –A car with no dual controls, which leaves a complete beginner without a safety net if something goes wrong.
- –Lessons that start late, finish early, or get cancelled at short notice without a clear cancellation and refund policy.
- –An instructor who is on the phone or visibly distracted while you are driving.
- –Pressure to prepay a large package with no clear process for refunding unused lessons.
- –A manner that involves shouting or sharp criticism, which reviewers have noted destroys confidence in already nervous learners.
What should you ask before booking driving lessons?
- –Can you show me proof of a current driving instructor endorsement before we start?
- –Is the car fitted with dual controls, and is it automatic or manual?
- –If I need manual lessons, do you teach in a manual car, and is it yours or mine?
- –What does one hour cost, is there a package rate, and what happens to any unused lessons if I stop early?
- –What is your cancellation policy, and how much notice do you need?
- –Can I use your car for the practical test, and if so, what does that cost?
- –Do you pick up and drop off from home, school, or work?
- –Do you have experience with nervous learners, older learners, or people converting an overseas licence?
- –Will I have the same instructor every lesson, or could I be assigned to someone different?

About this ranking
What the 10 driving instructors listed above hold, at the 31 October 2026 check.
How are the top driving instructors on the North Shore chosen?
We build this page from Google Maps results for driving instructors on the North Shore. Each one is scored on its public rating and review record, using the same published method on every page. Businesses outside the area, or whose reviews describe a different line of work, are left out. Every category and city is rechecked on a rolling cycle, about every two to three months. See how we rank for how rankings are made and who is left out. On specialist pages like this one, a business's reviews count in proportion to how many of them are about driving instructors, so a business mostly reviewed for other work cannot win on review volume alone. See the words we look for.
Are you a driving instructor on the North Shore?
No business can pay for a place in these rankings. Claiming and verifying your listing is free: it adds a small trust bonus (+3 points) to your score, for confirming a real operator stands behind the listing, and gives you a dashboard showing how your score is made up. A paid subscription adds a website link, a profile page and your ranking history. Claim your listing or see what a subscription includes.
Not listed? The usual reasons are a Google Business category that does not match, too few reviews to score near the top, or an address outside the area we cover. Check where you rank first, and if you think we missed you, get in touch.
