Before you hire
Whether you call it house washing, a building wash or exterior house cleaning, the methods differ: soft washing uses low pressure and cleaning agents, while high-pressure washing can damage paint and timber if used incorrectly. Ask which method they use on your cladding type, whether they also do roofs and windows, and confirm they carry insurance for paint or surface damage.

Before you book a house washing company in Tauranga
Drawn from 186 customer reviews collected for this page. The first answer is what it costs.
What does house washing typically cost in New Zealand? expand_more
A standard house wash in New Zealand runs between $150 and $500 for an average-sized home. Larger homes or properties with heavy moss and lichen buildup will sit toward the upper end or beyond.
Some operators price by the square metre at roughly $1 to $3 per sqm. Bundling in roof treatment, gutter clearing, or driveway washing will add to that total.
Does a house washing company need any qualifications or insurance to operate in New Zealand? expand_more
House washing is an unregulated trade in New Zealand, meaning no formal licence or qualification is required by law for anyone to operate a business in this space. Reputable operators should carry public liability insurance of at least $1 million to $2 million, which protects you if surfaces are damaged during the job.
One negative review in this market involved cedar cladding damaged by pressure washing, where the consumer had to pay a painter to fix it and received no compensation, making insurance coverage a practical non-negotiable before you book. Ask for written confirmation of current cover before work starts, as there is no central register to check this independently.
What's the difference between soft washing and pressure washing, and which is right for my house? expand_more
Soft washing combines low-pressure water with chemical solutions to kill and remove biological growth like mould, lichen, and algae, making it the safer choice for painted weatherboards, fibre cement, timber, and monolithic cladding. Pressure washing uses high-pressure water alone and is well suited to hard surfaces like concrete driveways, paths, and brick. A reviewed case in this market shows exactly what goes wrong when the methods are confused: high-pressure washing on cedar left visible wood damage that required a painter to fix, at a cost exceeding the original wash price.
What are the warning signs of a house washing company you shouldn't use? expand_more
- –A company that applies pressure washing to timber, fibre cement, or painted cladding without discussing cladding type first is a risk.
- –Poor communication before the job, including late arrivals without notice, missed time slots, or no follow-up after work is done, signals broader unreliability.
- –Operators who do not check neighbouring properties before starting, such as leaving adjacent windows or washing lines coated in overspray, show a lack of site awareness.
- –Promising before and after photos or videos as part of the service and then not delivering them points to a pattern of unfulfilled commitments.
- –A company that responds to complaints by threatening debt collection rather than investigating the issue is one to avoid entirely.
- –Missing sections of the job, such as walls behind obstacles or high-up areas, and returning an incomplete result without proactively flagging it suggests shortcuts are the norm.
What should you ask before booking a house wash? expand_more
- –Ask whether they use soft washing or pressure washing, and confirm which method they recommend for your specific cladding type before agreeing to anything.
- –Ask what chemicals they use for moss and mould treatment, and whether those products comply with your local council's stormwater bylaws around biocide runoff.
- –Confirm what is included in the quoted price, specifically whether roof treatment, gutter clearing, driveway, deck, and window cleaning are line items or extras.
- –Ask whether they carry public liability insurance and request written confirmation of the current policy before work begins.
- –Ask if they provide before and after photos, since several operators in this market offer this as standard and it gives you a record if any dispute arises.
- –Ask how long the result should last and whether a retreatment schedule is recommended, particularly for roofs where moss and lichen regrowth is common in New Zealand's climate.

How are the top house washing companies in Tauranga chosen? expand_more
We build this page from Google Maps results for house washing companies in Tauranga. Each one is scored on its public rating and review record. Businesses outside the area, or whose reviews describe a different line of work, are left out, and a business whose main Google category is a different trade is held back until a person has checked what it does. A business whose website no longer resolves and that has had no Google review for six months is treated as dormant and left off the page until either changes. Every category and city is rechecked on a rolling cycle, about every two to three months. A location with a subscribing business is rechecked every month, and the whole page updates with it. See how we rank for the full method.
What does a business subscription offer? expand_more
No business can pay for a place in these rankings. Claiming and verifying a listing is free. It adds a phone number to the card and a small trust bonus (+3 points) to its score, for confirming a real operator stands behind the listing. The owner also gets a dashboard showing how their score is made up. A paid subscription provides an enhanced card with more ways to reach the business, including a website link and a detailed profile page. It also refreshes this page monthly and adds ranking history and competitor analysis to the owner's dashboard. The subscription adds nothing to the score. Why isn't my business listed? expand_more
We build this page from Google Maps results for house washing companies in Tauranga. The usual reasons for missing out are a Google Business category that does not match, too few reviews to score near the top, or an address outside the area we cover. Sometimes we miss a business that should be here. Check where you rank first. If you are not there and think you should be, get in touch.
