Takurua Vets is an independent veterinary clinic in Upper Riccarton, built around making veterinary care calmer for pets and easier for their people.
We are Zero Pain Philosophy accredited, and our team uses Fear Free handling techniques to help even anxious animals feel safe. We provide routine, surgical, diagnostic and hospital care, alongside urgent and after-hours treatment from our own clinic.
Open until 10pm on weekdays, with additional weekend hours, we give Christchurch pet owners a familiar place to turn when something cannot wait. Our team takes your concerns seriously, explains treatment options clearly and welcomes follow-up questions throughout your pet’s care.

We use Takarua as our main Vet for our almost two year old Ragdoll Momo and they are wonderful. They really helped out with her dermatitis a lot.
Such kind, caring and knowledgeable staff! Took amazing care of our cat who was with them for dental procedures and vaccinations. Clean, comfortable and compassionate environment. Wouldn’t want to go anywhere else for my petcare services.
Last weekend we went to get Duo Le vaccinated. He was a bit nervous and refused to take the pill, so they switched to an injection instead. Ms. Varney was extremely patient and gentle—thank you so much, highly recommended.
I have had 3 of my cats fixed and microchipped here at Takarua Vets and it was awesome. My cats healed so well and so fast, the people at the vets took proper care of them to make sure they were comfortable and had an easy procedure. They are also very kind and let you know everything about the procedures and healing processes. Since i started going here i have never even thought about going to another vet they are just so awesome and kind!!!!! Photos of my babies attached 😁

Our Phoebe who's our polydactyl 3 year old cat went down hill on Saturday night after 1130pm. Of course we were wondering if we should ring the vet being a Saturday night and all. The man who triaged our Phoebe was so lovely and didn't make us feel like we shouldn't have called. We were advised to bring her in immediately. Turns out Phoebe was fighting a fever, dehydrated, and was off her food and water. No input and no output except a vomit. She was admitted to Takarua Vet Hospital for rehydration and xrays ultràsound for a suspected obstruction. Dr Ebeneze was so reassuring we have PD pet insurance but she gave us a quote, as the days went by we got a running tally of what the procedures would cost. Xrays and surgery couldn't be ruled out but we agreed with Dr Ebeneze to "wait and see" she ended up not requiring surgery her fever came down and there was no need for more scans/xrays. This impressed me because that would have been unnecessary procedures. The second day Phoebe was in Hospital Dr Ebeneze called to give us an update and invite us to come down to visit with Phoebe. On day 3 Dr Michelle Du Toit called and gave us an update, she felt Phoebe was on the mend and could continue recouping at home. A follow-up appointment was made for 48hours post discharge, all was heading in the right direction, we have our 1 week post discharge this coming Wednesday. Takarua Vets aftercare is so brilliant. We know our Phoebe is in great hands, we felt consulted along the way with no surprise bills which is fantastic. (Pet insurance is a must). The separate seating area for dogs and cats is a good idea. The Feliway spray and blankets to cover the cat carriers is a nice touch. Even at discharge the wee named bags of medicine a few temptations a Takarua phone number fridge magnet are a lovely touch. Exceptional Care thank you TEAM. From the moment we walked in until the time we left we felt Phoebe was in safe hands.
