How much does a structural engineer cost in New Zealand? expand_more
Hourly rates published by engineering firms run from $90 for administration support up to $320 for a director, with a Chartered Professional Engineer at $280 to $300 and a graduate engineer at around $155, all excluding GST. For common residential jobs, published figures excluding GST range from $1,000 to $3,000 for a simple house alteration, $3,000 to $7,500 for a new dwelling designed to NZS 3604:2011, and $5,000 to $20,000 for a hillside or architecturally non-standard house. A retaining wall runs $3,000 to $5,000, an initial seismic assessment $2,000 to $4,000, a detailed seismic assessment $5,000 to $20,000, and a producer statement $600 to $1,500, each as a separate line item. Supplying clear dimensioned architectural drawings and a geotechnical report upfront keeps costs down, because the engineer otherwise bills the hours spent chasing them, and site visits and construction monitoring are charged separately from the design fee. Does a structural engineer have to be chartered, and what is a producer statement? expand_more
The Chartered Professional Engineers of New Zealand Act 2002 makes the titles Chartered Professional Engineer and CPEng protected: using either without being registered is an offence carrying a fine of up to $5,000 under section 7, and section 3 describes the title as a mark of quality signifying a particular standard of competence. Engineering New Zealand is the Registration Authority and must keep a public register under section 19, searchable alongside its members directory on its website. The practical point is that the title structural engineer on its own is not a protected title in New Zealand, so anyone may use it, and the check that matters is whether the person who will sign your work appears on the Engineering New Zealand CPEng register, not what their business card says, since some work and some councils specifically require a CPEng. A producer statement is a written professional opinion an engineer gives to a building consent authority: a PS1 covers the design and is commonly submitted with a building consent application where an engineer carried out the structural design, while a PS4 is issued on completion of construction monitoring, and the council decides what it accepts and from whom.
When do you need a structural engineer rather than a builder or an architect? expand_more
Engineering input is needed when the work goes beyond what a standard solution already covers, including removing or altering a load-bearing wall, adding a storey or a heavier roof, building a deck or structure on posts outside standard solutions, a retaining wall above the consent-exempt height, foundations on soft or sloping or filled ground, underpinning, and assessing damage after an earthquake, a flood or a vehicle impact. A builder following a standard solution within NZS 3604:2011 may need no engineer at all, an architect or designer decides how the building looks and functions, and the structural engineer decides whether it will stand up and carry its loads through wind and earthquake. A geotechnical engineer, not a structural engineer, investigates and reports on the ground itself, and a structural engineer usually wants that geotechnical report before designing foundations on difficult ground, so confirm which discipline you are being quoted for before signing anything.
What are the warning signs of a structural engineer to avoid? expand_more

- –A fee quoted as a range is then billed at the top of it, with hours added for chasing information the engineer never requested from you at the start.
- –The design is so conservative it prices the build up significantly, and the engineer shows no willingness to discuss alternative approaches.
- –Reports are written in language the client cannot act on, with no plain-language explanation of what needs to happen next.
- –A producer statement is refused at the end of the job, or a new fee is attached to it that was not mentioned in the original quote.
- –When the council issues a request for further information, the engineer goes silent and the client is left to relay questions between the council and the engineer, making it the client problem rather than the engineer problem.
