How much does it cost to build a swimming pool in New Zealand? expand_more
Fibreglass pools start at roughly $35,000 to $55,000 for a standard size, rising to $65,000 or more for a large shell or premium colour. Concrete pools run about $55,000 to $80,000 at a standard 8 by 4 metres, and $80,000 to $150,000 or more for larger or shaped designs. Plunge pools start at around $25,000 in fibreglass and $35,000 in concrete. The shell price alone can be half the finished cost once extras are added.
Does a new pool need a building consent and a fence in New Zealand? expand_more
Under the Building Act 2004, any residential pool with a maximum water depth of 400 mm or more must have a physical barrier restricting access by unsupervised children under five, with that duty sitting on the pool owner and occupier, not the builder (sections 162B and 162C). The barrier always requires a building consent, as Schedule 1 clauses 21 and 23 expressly exclude pool barriers from every exemption. The pool itself needs a building consent unless it holds 35,000 litres or less and is supported directly by the ground (Schedule 1, clause 23). The council, or an independently qualified pool inspector it accepts, must inspect the barrier at least once every three years (section 162D), and ignoring a notice to fix a non-compliant barrier carries a fine of up to $20,000 for an individual (section 168).
Should you choose a concrete or a fibreglass pool? expand_more
A fibreglass shell is manufactured in a factory and craned into the excavated hole, so on-site installation is quick, the smooth surface resists algae, and day-to-day chemical maintenance is lower, but the shape and size are locked to available moulds and your site must allow crane access. A concrete pool is formed on site, which means any shape, depth, or size is achievable and it suits a sloping or difficult section, but the build takes longer and the interior finish in plaster, pebble, or tile will need resurfacing over the pool's life, which reviewers who had older pools knew well when arranging replastering and retiling work. Before signing with either type, ask separately about the structural guarantee on the shell or structure and the workmanship warranty, because they cover different things and run for different periods.
