Before you hire
Whether it is a washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, oven or dryer, ask for the callout fee and hourly rate before booking, and check whether the callout is credited against the repair if you go ahead. A good technician will tell you when a fix is not worth it against the price of a replacement. For anything still under manufacturer warranty, use the brand's authorised agent so you do not void the cover.

Before you book an appliance repair service in Palmerston North
Drawn from 117 customer reviews collected for this page. The first answer is what it costs.
What does appliance repair typically cost in New Zealand?
Callout or diagnostic fees in New Zealand sit between $80 and $150 including GST. Labour rates run from $90 to $180 per hour, with Palmerston North sitting toward the lower end of that range.
Parts are charged on top, and a washing machine repair can land anywhere from $150 to $400 all in. Weekend or after-hours callouts attract a premium, and one local review flagged a $94 callout fee that was not disclosed upfront, so always ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited against the repair if you proceed.
How is an appliance repairer held accountable for a faulty repair?
Appliance repair is not a licensed trade in New Zealand, so accountability rests on the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, which requires repairs to be carried out with reasonable care and skill. Any prescribed electrical work must be done by a registered electrician certified with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB), and you can verify a tradesperson's registration on the EWRB website before booking.
For in-warranty appliances, using the manufacturer's authorised agent matters because independent repairs can void the warranty, and reviews here show repeat failed repairs on warranty jobs where consumers had little recourse. A reputable repairer will provide a written warranty covering both labour and the replacement part, so ask for that in writing before work begins.
When is it worth repairing an appliance instead of replacing it?
The practical rule is that if the repair quote exceeds roughly half the price of a new equivalent appliance, replacement is the better financial call. Age matters too: washing machines and dishwashers are expected to last 10 to 15 years, refrigerators up to 20, so a fault early in that window is worth fixing, especially if the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 entitles you to a free remedy from the retailer. A repairer worth hiring will tell you honestly over the phone, from the model number and fault description, whether parts are still available and whether the fix makes financial sense.
What are the warning signs of an appliance repairer you should not use?
- –No callout fee quoted upfront, with the charge only revealed on the invoice after the visit.
- –Repeat visits for the same fault with no lasting fix, which reviews here document across multiple appliance types.
- –Parts costs that exceed what the manufacturer charges directly on their own website.
- –Vague or shifting diagnoses that result in unnecessary part replacements without resolving the original problem.
- –No written warranty offered on either the repair labour or the replacement part.
- –Missed appointments with no communication, or long unexplained delays sourcing parts that are readily available from local suppliers.
What should you ask before booking an appliance repair?
- –What is the callout or diagnostic fee, and is it credited against the total repair cost if you go ahead?
- –Do you hold stock or have fast local access to parts for my specific brand and model?
- –Will you warranty both the labour and the replacement part, and for how long?
- –Can you give a rough repair-or-replace steer over the phone based on the model number and fault description?
- –Are you the manufacturer's authorised service agent, and does using you preserve my warranty if the appliance is still within its warranty period?

About this ranking
What the 10 appliance repair services listed above hold, at the 3 September 2026 check.
Across the 11 locations we assess appliance repair services in, the 93 businesses listed have a median rating of 4.8, and one-star reviews are 5.3% of their total.
How are the top appliance repair services in Palmerston North chosen?
We build this page from Google Maps results for appliance repair services in Palmerston North. Each one is scored on its public rating and review record. Businesses outside the area, or whose reviews describe a different line of work, are left out, and a business whose main Google category is a different trade is held back until a person has checked what it does. A business whose website no longer resolves and that has had no Google review for six months is treated as dormant and left off the page until either changes. Every category and city is rechecked on a rolling cycle, about every two to three months. A location with a subscribing business is rechecked every month, and the whole page updates with it. See how we rank for the full method. On specialist pages like this one, a business's reviews count in proportion to how many of them are about appliance repair services, so a business mostly reviewed for other work cannot win on review volume alone. See the words we look for.
What does a business subscription offer?
No business can pay for a place in these rankings. Claiming and verifying a listing is free. It adds a phone number to the card and a small trust bonus (+3 points) to its score, for confirming a real operator stands behind the listing. The owner also gets a dashboard showing how their score is made up. A paid subscription provides an enhanced card with more ways to reach the business, including a website link and a detailed profile page. It also refreshes this page monthly and adds ranking history and competitor analysis to the owner's dashboard. The subscription adds nothing to the score. Claim your listing or see what a subscription includes.
Why isn't my business listed?
We build this page from Google Maps results for appliance repair services in Palmerston North. The usual reasons for missing out are a Google Business category that does not match, too few reviews to score near the top, or an address outside the area we cover. Sometimes we miss a business that should be here. Check where you rank first. If you are not there and think you should be, get in touch.
