Installed solar cost by system size
A 5kW system, about 12 panels, costs about $11,500 installed. A 10kW system is about $20,000. That is the size to look at if you drive an EV or expect to. These are EECA's figures, covering the panels, the inverter, standard installation and GST.
Smaller systems are in the table below, and they cost more per kilowatt. Design, scaffolding and the electrician's day land much the same whether you fit 7 panels or 12, so EECA's own figures work out at about $1,200 a panel at 3kW against $830 at 10kW. That does not make a small system wrong for a low-use household. It does mean you should compare quotes on cost per kilowatt, not on the total.
A quote well under this table is not necessarily wrong, but check what it leaves out. The usual omissions are scaffolding, the inspection every grid-tied system needs, and any switchboard work the install turns out to need. Those get added later if they were not quoted.
A quote will show you two kW figures: the panels and the inverter. The sizes here are panel capacity, the one that matches the panel counts. The inverter is normally rated lower, and that is standard practice rather than a corner cut. Panels rarely hit their lab rating on a real roof, so an inverter matched to the panels' paper rating would sit under-used most of the time and cost more for the privilege. Fronius allow panel capacity up to one and a half times the inverter's rating on their own datasheet. The trade is that output is capped on the brightest days.

Worked out from EECA's published sizes: 7 panels at $8,500, 12 at $11,500 and 24 at $20,000. Sizes in between are estimated between the nearest published figures, so the cost per panel falls as the system gets bigger, as EECA's own numbers do. A rough range, not a quote, and not a prediction of what you will save. Get at least two written quotes, and ask each installer what self-consumption rate they used, because that one assumption can make a payback look years shorter than it is.
Should you add a battery?
If you are buying solar to save money, a battery usually works against you.
A 5kW system costs about $11,500 and takes roughly $1,200 a year off your bill. Add a 10kWh battery and the price nearly doubles to $21,500, but the saving cannot double with it. A battery generates nothing. It only holds power you would otherwise have sold to the grid.
EECA put the gain from storage at 1 to 2 percentage points on your return, and Consumer NZ found a battery usually lengthens payback. Neither of them sells batteries.
There are still good reasons to buy one: backup through an outage, an empty house all day, a plan that pays well at peak. If backup is the reason, say so before you sign. A battery does not keep the house running by itself, it needs the right hardware and a nominated set of circuits, so ask which ones stay live and what that adds. Either way, ask the installer to show you the savings with the battery and without it.

The cheaper alternative to a battery
Solar pays best when you use the power yourself, because what a retailer pays you to export is less than what you pay to buy it back. A hot water cylinder is the cheapest way to close that gap. You already own one.
James Le Page, EECA's lead technical adviser, calls an electric cylinder "kind of a budget battery". It works because of scale. EECA put water heating at about a third of a household's energy use, so shifting it into the middle of the day moves a large block of demand under your own roof.
A timer is the cheap option. It switches the cylinder on across the sunniest hours whether or not the sun turns up. A smart switch costs more and does the job better, pushing surplus into the cylinder instead of the grid. EECA name both as low-cost ways to lift what solar saves you.
Some installers fold a basic timer into the base price, so check what is already included in your quote. Get it priced next to any battery you are offered.

What solar pays back
Where you live moves the saving less than people assume. EECA put Southland at about $1,047 a year and Marlborough at $1,467, with everywhere else in between. The 7 to 10 year payback holds as long as you use most of what you generate during the day.
No static page can tell you your own payback, because it depends on your roof's angle and direction and on when your household actually uses power. EECA model all three in their own calculator. The system and battery prices on this page are theirs too, not an installer's. Get your own number before you read an installer's.

How to read a solar quote
Two quotes for the same roof can show very different payback periods without either one being wrong about the prices. The difference is usually an assumption, and the one that moves it most is your self-consumption rate: how much of what you generate you use yourself instead of exporting.
Consumer NZ tested exactly this. They had one system quoted at the standard assumed rate, then again at 100 per cent self-consumption, which describes a household that exports nothing at all. The stated payback fell from 15 years to under 9. Nothing on the final quote showed which assumption had produced it.
- Ask what self-consumption rate was used, and get it in writing. It is a setting in the installer's quoting software, not a property of your roof. Fair to ask, and easy to answer.
- Hand over 12 months of power bills. Then the model runs on what your household actually uses rather than on a default, which is Consumer NZ's advice.
- Get more than one quote. A second opinion is the only reliable way to notice that one set of assumptions is out of step with the rest.
- Expect to be asked questions. Consumer NZ say a good installer checks your latest bill and asks about household size and big loads such as an electric car or a pool. One that quotes without asking is guessing.
What changes a solar quote
- Roof access. EECA list this as a direct cost factor. A single storey with room for a ladder is cheaper to work on than a steep two storey that needs scaffolding before anyone gets near the roof.
- System size and storage. The two biggest numbers in any quote, and separate decisions. Size the panels first, from what your household uses in daylight, then decide on storage.
- Roof direction and shade. Consumer NZ's advice is a north facing roof in full sun. Shade matters most in the middle of the day, when panels do most of their generating. A tree across them at noon costs far more than one across them at 4pm.
- Roof condition. Panels last decades, so a roof near the end of its life should be replaced before they go on. Consumer NZ make the same point: nobody wants to lift a working array off after three years to fix the iron underneath.
- When you use power. Not just how much. Solar pays best when someone is home drawing power while the sun is up. An EV or an electric hot water cylinder helps, because both can be set to run in the middle of the day.
- Your export limit. Since 11 May 2026 lines companies must offer a default 10kW limit, replacing an older regime where some capped houses at 5kW. A few offer a flexible limit instead. It caps what you push to the grid at any one moment, not how many panels you may fit. We publish no buy-back rates anywhere on this page. They change too often, and vary too much between retailers and plans, for a page like this to keep them honest. Ask your own retailer.
- Panel warranty. Two numbers matter and quotes rarely set them side by side: the product warranty covers the panel itself failing, the performance warranty guarantees output years out. Two quotes for the same roof can match on one and differ sharply on the other, so ask for both.
