Before you hire

Whether you want investment advice, financial planning or wealth management, financial advisers in NZ must be licensed under the Financial Markets Conduct Act. Check their licence on the Financial Service Providers Register, ask how they are paid (fee-for-service or commission), and confirm they are required to act in your best interest, not just recommend suitable products.

Before you choose a financial advisor in New Zealand

Drawn from 200 customer reviews collected for this page. The first answer is what it costs.

What does a financial advisor typically cost? expand_more

Fee structures fall into three main models: hourly rates, fixed fees, and commission from product providers. Hourly rates run from around $150 to $400, while a full financial plan commonly costs between $1,500 and $5,000.

Mortgage and insurance advisers often charge no direct fee, earning commission from lenders or insurers instead. Under the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013, any commission must be disclosed to you before advice is given.

Does a financial advisor need to be licensed? expand_more

Licensing is mandatory for anyone providing financial advice to retail clients for payment in New Zealand. Every adviser must either hold their own Financial Advice Provider (FAP) licence issued by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) or operate under a licensed employer's authorisation.

You can verify any adviser's status by searching the Financial Service Providers Register (FSPR) at the Companies Office website, which is free and publicly accessible. An adviser who cannot give you their FAP licence details or does not appear on that register is not legally permitted to advise you.

How do I know if the advice is tailored to my situation, or just a product recommendation? expand_more

Tailored advice starts with questions about your goals, risk tolerance, income, and family circumstances before any product is mentioned. Reviews highlight advisers who explained multiple options and walked clients through the differences, including for KiwiSaver, insurance, and mortgages, rather than presenting a single solution. Under FMA disclosure rules, an adviser must tell you what products they can recommend and what commission they receive, so if they only ever name one provider, ask directly whether they are limited to that option.

What are the warning signs of a financial advisor you shouldn't use? expand_more
  • –An adviser who leads with one product or one provider without explaining why others were ruled out.
  • –Pressure to refer friends or family in exchange for access to basic information or tools that competitors offer free.
  • –Commission or remuneration that is not clearly explained before advice is given.
  • –An adviser who sounds annoyed or dismissive when you decline or ask for time to think.
  • –Poor communication after the first meeting, including being hard to reach when you have follow-up questions.
  • –Advice that feels generic and does not reflect your age, income, risk profile, or specific goals.
What should you ask before hiring a financial advisor? expand_more
  • –Which product providers and lenders do you have access to, and are there any you cannot recommend?
  • –How are you paid, and can you show me the exact commission or fee amounts in writing before we proceed?
  • –Will you present more than one option, and will you explain the trade-offs between them?
  • –How often will you review my situation after the initial advice, and what triggers a proactive check-in from you?
  • –What is your process if my circumstances change, for example a job loss, new dependant, or property purchase?
  • –Can I verify your Financial Advice Provider licence on the Financial Service Providers Register (FSPR)?

How are the top financial advisors in New Zealand chosen? expand_more

This national page is built from our city rankings, so a business appears here only if it already ranks in one of the cities we cover. Each one is scored on its public rating and review record. Businesses outside the area, or whose reviews describe a different line of work, are left out, and a business whose main Google category is a different trade is held back until a person has checked what it does. A business whose website no longer resolves and that has had no Google review for six months is treated as dormant and left off the page until either changes. Every category and city is rechecked on a rolling cycle, about every two to three months. A location with a subscribing business is rechecked every month, and the whole page updates with it. See how we rank for the full method.

What does a business subscription offer? expand_more

No business can pay for a place in these rankings. Claiming and verifying a listing is free. It adds a phone number to the card and a small trust bonus (+3 points) to its score, for confirming a real operator stands behind the listing. The owner also gets a dashboard showing how their score is made up. A paid subscription provides an enhanced card with more ways to reach the business, including a website link and a detailed profile page. It also refreshes this page monthly and adds ranking history and competitor analysis to the owner's dashboard. The subscription adds nothing to the score. Claim your listing or see what a subscription includes.

Why isn't my business listed? expand_more

This national page is built from our city rankings, so a business appears here only if it already ranks in one of the cities we cover. The usual reasons for missing out are a Google Business category that does not match, too few reviews to score near the top, or an address outside the area we cover. Sometimes we miss a business that should be here. Check where you rank first. If you are not there and think you should be, get in touch.
