New Zealanders who are happy with their plumber and New Zealanders who are furious with theirs are, more often than not, describing the same standard of plumbing. What differs is everything around the pipe. Speed of response, whether the phone gets answered, whether the bill matches the quote. Top5.nz classified every review held for 224 ranked plumbing businesses against a fixed set of themes, and the split between what wins stars and what loses them is stark.
"Booked for 2pm. No-show by 5pm. And no call to say they weren't coming."
What earns the five stars
A fast response is the single most common thing a happy customer mentions, named in nearly half of all four and five-star reviews. It beats praise for the plumbing itself, and it beats everything else by a wide margin.
Share of 2,301 four and five-star reviews mentioning each theme. A review often mentions more than one, so the figures do not sum to 100%.
Speed at the first point of contact does more for a rating than anything that happens later. Customers notice who picks up. "Of the companies I called, this one answered instantly while the others went to voicemail," one wrote. Another, after a burst pipe on a Sunday: "He was round within the hour, sorted it out, no stress."
Communication runs a close third, and one habit recurs: the call ahead. "He called in advance to let me know he was on his way, then explained what he was doing and why." A two-minute heads-up buys goodwill far beyond what it costs.
The work itself is praised in a third of positive reviews, so it clearly matters. The point is that it does not stand out. A customer expects the plumbing to be done well, and rewards the plumber who is also fast and easy to deal with.
Two smaller themes carry weight out of proportion to how often they appear. Pricing praise is almost never about being cheap: "The cost was exactly as per the quote" is the phrasing that recurs, a firm number that did not move. And the unrequested extra, showing a new homeowner where the water shut-off is, tightening a loose tap in passing, is remembered warmly long after the job.
What costs the stars
The 119 reviews rating a plumber three stars or below were, on average, more than twice as long as the positive ones. Unhappy customers explain themselves, and their complaints point overwhelmingly at the service, not the plumbing.
Share of 119 reviews rating three stars or below mentioning each theme. Themes overlap: an angry review often cites several.
Billing is the single most common complaint, in more than four of every ten low reviews. An undisclosed call-out fee, a verbal quote quietly exceeded, travel time to fetch a missing part charged back to the customer. "Quoted verbally, then the bill came in higher, and no breakdown when I asked." The money is rarely the whole grievance. Being surprised by it is.
Conduct and going silent together account for a large share of the rest. A dismissive receptionist, a plumber who talks over the customer, and above all the firm that stops replying once something goes wrong. "I contacted them multiple times, emails and phone calls, no response at all" is the shape of the angriest reviews, and it is nearly always about what happened after the invoice.
Faults with the actual plumbing do appear, in about a third of low reviews, but they rarely arrive alone. They sit alongside a billing dispute or a silent phone, which is usually what tips a fixable mistake into a one-star rating.
The same work, a different rating
Set the two sides next to each other and the pattern is clear. The plumbing work is praised and faulted at almost the same rate, roughly a third each way. It is the constant. What swings the rating is the service around it, and the two sides are near mirror images: what customers praise as speed and communication is exactly what the unhappy ones say was missing.
| Theme | In positive reviews | In negative reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Speed of response | 46% | 17% |
| Communication | 31% | 25% |
| Pricing and billing | 18% | 43% |
| The plumbing work itself | 34% | 36% |
Speed of response in negative reviews combines no-shows and reviews about slowness. Communication in negative reviews counts reviews where the plumber stopped responding.
For a plumbing business, that is an opportunity, not a telling-off. The hard-won part of the trade, the technical work, is already landing. The gap between three stars and five is made of things that cost almost nothing to change: answering the phone, calling ahead, putting the fee in writing before the visit, and ringing back when a customer follows up.
This analysis skews recent, with most reviews published in 2025 and 2026, and strongly positive, with about nine in ten reviews rating four or five stars. It describes what customers of New Zealand's better-rated plumbers experience, not the whole market. The negative themes are drawn from 119 reviews: enough to rank what recurs, but small enough that each percentage carries a few points of sampling noise. Themes were assigned by whether a review mentions them, so a single review can count toward several.
Methodology: Top5.nz analysed all 2,420 Google reviews held for 224 ranked plumbing businesses across ten New Zealand markets, collected through mid-2026. Each review was classified against a fixed taxonomy of six positive and six negative themes using AI-assisted analysis, multi-label, so a review may carry several themes or none. No reviews were excluded. A manual check of a stratified 50-review sample agreed with the automated tags on 94% of reviews. No business is named. Full ranking methodology: top5.nz/how-we-rank.
