Before you book a security system installer in Auckland
Any business paid to fit alarms or security cameras in someone else's home or workplace needs a licence from the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority, and its installers must wear a photo ID badge; the Authority's public register shows who holds one. If you are offered monitoring, ask how long the contract runs, what it costs to leave early, and which monitoring centre will answer your alarm.
The questions below are drawn from 651 customer reviews collected for this page.
What does a home alarm or camera system cost to install in NZ?
Published starting prices from Auckland installers put a wireless home alarm at around $850 to $1,400 installed. Wired alarm systems run from about $1,200 up to $3,000 depending on zone count and cable routes.
A four-camera CCTV system with recorder and storage costs roughly $1,200 to $3,200 installed, rising to $3,500 to $5,500 for eight 4K cameras. Roof access and long cable runs are what push camera quotes up, not the cameras themselves.
Does a security installer need a licence, and how do I check?
Under the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010, any business paid to install alarms or cameras on premises it does not own must hold a licence, and each employee or contractor doing that work must hold a certificate of approval, both issued by the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA). The PSPLA's public register, searchable on the Ministry of Justice website, shows the class of work covered, expiry date, any conditions, and whether a licence has been suspended or cancelled.
A licensed installer must produce their licence on demand and wear a visible photo ID badge showing their unique number and the classes of work they are authorised to do. A homeowner fitting a kit in their own home falls outside the Act, but any tradesperson you pay to do the work does not.
How do I choose between monitored and self-monitored, and wired and wireless?
Self-monitoring sends alerts straight to your phone and works well if someone is usually nearby and can act quickly, but a staffed monitoring centre matters when you travel regularly, run a business, or store valuables, because it can dispatch a guard even if you miss the alert. Reviewers who opted for 4G-connected monitoring noted confidence in knowing the connection holds during a power cut, which is worth asking about.
Wireless alarms install faster with less disruption to walls and ceilings, while cameras and larger commercial sites almost always need cabling for reliable footage and storage. Before committing to monitored security, ask which control room answers your alarm, where it is located, and what grade it holds, with the New Zealand Security Association recommending monitoring centres meet grade C3 as a minimum under AS 2201.2-2004.
What are the warning signs of a security installer you should avoid?
- –Ask for the PSPLA licence number before work starts; an installer who cannot produce it or refuses to show a photo ID badge is operating outside the law.
- –One reviewer noted their installer fitted an outdated NVR model without disclosing it; ask specifically what equipment generation you are getting before signing anything.
- –A long monitoring contract with exit fees buried in the fine print is a red flag; month-to-month arrangements are available and some installers offer them.
- –Cameras aimed directly at a neighbour's property, doors or windows breach the Privacy Commissioner's guidance and can expose you to a complaint.
- –Slow or no response when a system fails is a pattern worth watching for; one reviewer found their cameras unreliable and connectivity flaky long after installation.
- –An installer who pushes cheap retail-grade kit at professional installation prices, without disclosing the product tier, is not giving you fair value.
What should you ask before hiring a security installer?
- –Ask for the installer's PSPLA licence number and the certificate of approval number for the technician doing the work, then verify both on the Ministry of Justice public register.
- –Find out who monitors the alarm, where the monitoring centre is, what grade it holds, and what a guard call-out costs on top of the monthly fee.
- –Confirm the contract length and the exact cost of leaving early, including any equipment buyout clause.
- –Ask what the warranty covers, specifically whether it includes both parts and labour, and for how long.
- –Clarify who owns the footage, the DVR or NVR, and the app account if you switch provider, so you are not locked out of your own system.
- –Ask whether false alarm fees apply and who is responsible if a fault in the installed system triggers a false call-out.

How are the top security system installers in Auckland chosen?
We build this page from Google Maps results for security system installers in Auckland. Each one is scored on its public rating and review record, using the same published method on every page. Businesses outside the area, or whose reviews describe a different line of work, are left out. Every category and city is rechecked on a rolling cycle, about every two to three months. See how we rank for how rankings are made and who is left out. On specialist pages like this one, a business's reviews count in proportion to how many of them are about security system installers, so a business mostly reviewed for other work cannot win on review volume alone. See the words we look for.
Are you a security system installer in Auckland?
No business can pay for a place in these rankings. Claiming and verifying your listing is free: it adds a small trust bonus (+3 points) to your score, for confirming a real operator stands behind the listing, and gives you a dashboard showing how your score is made up. A paid subscription adds a website link, a profile page and your ranking history. Claim your listing or see what a subscription includes.
Not listed? The usual reasons are a Google Business category that does not match, too few reviews to score near the top, or an address outside the area we cover. Check where you rank first, and if you think we missed you, get in touch.
