Before you hire a drainlayer in Auckland

Laying, altering, repairing or opening up a private drain is restricted work: it must be done by someone holding a current practising licence from the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board, or under the supervision of one, and there is no exemption for householders doing it themselves. Clearing a blockage is not named in that list, but a cracked or collapsed pipe found on the camera is, so ask to see the CCTV footage before you agree to a repair.

The questions below are drawn from 720 customer reviews collected for this page.

How much does it cost to unblock a drain in New Zealand?

Installer-published Auckland prices start at $285 plus GST for the first hour when a drain unblocking truck is needed, with each additional hour at $210 plus GST. A stand-alone CCTV drain inspection runs around $250 plus GST for up to one hour.

After-hours call-outs carry a significant premium, with one published rate sitting at $550 plus GST. At 15 percent GST, a $285 first-hour rate becomes $327.75 in your hand.

Does a drainlayer need a licence, and who pays when a drain is blocked?

Laying, altering, repairing, opening up or renewing a private drain, or fitting a gully trap or connecting to a septic tank, is drainlaying under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006 and must be done by someone holding a current practising licence from the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB), or working under the supervision of one. There is no householder exemption for drainlaying work, and any repair a camera inspection reveals is restricted work requiring a licensed person.

Clearing a blockage is not named in the Act's definition of drainlaying, but if the tradesperson finds a cracked, collapsed or root-damaged pipe, that repair falls squarely under the Act. In Auckland, Watercare asks residents to call Watercare first before contacting a tradesperson, as responsibility sits with the owner on their side of the point of supply; for other cities, check with your local council or water utility. For rentals, tenants must tell the landlord straight away about any fault, and careless damage by a tenant or guest is capped at four weeks rent or the landlord's insurance excess, whichever is lower.

Is a blocked drain a quick unblock, or a sign the drain needs repairing?

A one-off blockage from fat, wipes or hair is usually cleared in a single visit, but a drain that keeps blocking, gurgles, smells or backs up at the gully trap is often telling you there is an underlying fault such as tree roots, a cracked pipe or a sunken joint. A CCTV camera inspection is how that fault gets found, and reviewers specifically valued being shown the footage on the spot and receiving before-and-after photos so they could see the problem themselves before agreeing to any further work. Reviewers also appreciated technicians who said plainly when a clean was all that was needed, and who gave honest advice on what not to put down the drain to prevent a repeat.

What are the warning signs of a drain company to avoid?
  • –A phone estimate that grows significantly once the technician is on site, with no clear explanation of what changed.
  • –After-hours or weekend rates that are not stated before anyone is dispatched to your property.
  • –A hard sell on pipe repair or relining without offering to show you the camera footage first.
  • –A blockage that returns within days and the company does not respond or follow up.
  • –Mess, sewage residue or soil damage left around the gully trap or garden with no clean-up or disinfecting.
  • –An hourly rate that appears to start from when the technician leaves their depot rather than when they arrive at your door.
What should you ask a drainlayer or drain unblocker before they start?
  • –Is the price fixed or hourly, does it include GST, and exactly when does the clock start?
  • –Is a high-pressure water jetter included in that price, or is it charged separately if needed?
  • –Is a CCTV camera inspection included, and will you be shown the footage on site or sent it afterwards?
  • –If the camera reveals a crack, root damage or a collapsed pipe, who on the crew holds a current drainlaying practising licence from the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board to carry out that repair?
  • –What is the after-hours or weekend rate if this is an urgent call-out, stated before anyone is sent?
  • –If the blockage returns within a short period, what is your callback or warranty policy?
