Installer-published Auckland prices put the first-hour drain unblocking rate at $285 plus GST, which is $327.75 once GST at 15 percent is added. A fixed first-visit fee from another operator starts at $350 plus GST and includes a camera inspection; a stand-alone CCTV drain inspection runs $250 plus GST for up to one hour.

After-hours or emergency call-outs are published at $550 plus GST. A pipe found to be cracked, collapsed or root-damaged is quoted separately as a repair job, and no reliable published figures exist for that work.

Does a drainlayer need a licence, and who pays when a drain is blocked?

Laying, altering, repairing, opening up or renewing a private drain, and fitting a gully trap or connecting to a septic tank, is drainlaying under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006 and must be done by someone holding a current practising licence from the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB), or working under the supervision of one. There is no householder exemption for drainlaying, and any repair the camera reveals is restricted work requiring a licensed person.

Clearing a blockage is not named in the Act's definition of drainlaying, though you can verify any contractor's licence on the PGDB's public register before work begins. In Auckland, Watercare is responsible for the public pipe, and you are responsible on your side of the point of supply; Watercare asks residents with a blocked private drain to call Watercare first, before contacting a tradesperson.

For other cities, check with your local council or water utility, as each sets its own arrangements. In a rental, tenants must tell the landlord straight away about anything needing repair, and if a tenant or guest caused the blockage carelessly, liability is capped at four weeks' rent or the landlord's insurance excess, whichever is lower.

Is a blocked drain a quick unblock, or a sign the drain needs repairing?

A one-off blockage from fat, wipes or hair is usually cleared in a single visit, but a drain that keeps blocking, gurgles, smells, or backs up at the gully trap often has an underlying fault such as tree roots, a cracked pipe, a sunken joint, or a damaged fitting. A CCTV camera inspection is how that fault is identified, and asking to see or be sent the footage lets you confirm the problem yourself before agreeing to any repair.
