Before you hire
Most IT support companies in New Zealand sell one of two things: a managed service contract, which is a fixed monthly fee per user or device covering monitoring, updates and a helpdesk, or break-fix work billed by the hour, and a low hourly rate means little if every problem takes a site visit. Ask what the response time is when a system is down, who holds the admin passwords, domain name and software licences if you leave, and when a backup was last restored rather than just taken. Under the Privacy Act 2020 a breach likely to cause serious harm must be reported to the Privacy Commissioner as soon as practicable, and that duty sits with your business, not your provider, so ask how they would help you meet it.

Before you hire an IT support company on the North Shore
Drawn from 703 customer reviews collected for this page. The first answer is what it costs.
What does IT support cost for a small business in New Zealand? expand_more
Managed services run about $80 to $130 per user per month for helpdesk, monitoring, patching and Microsoft 365 administration. A fully managed plan adding endpoint security, tested backups and multi-factor authentication costs roughly $130 to $220 per user per month. Ad hoc break-fix support is billed at around $120 to $190 per hour, with senior or specialist work at $200 or more and after-hours rates at 1.5 to 2 times the standard charge. Expect a one-off onboarding fee of $1,000 to $5,000, and treat any per-user price well below these bands as a signal that on-site time, projects or security tooling has been stripped out.
If my IT provider is breached or loses my data, who is responsible? expand_more
IT support is not a licensed trade in New Zealand, so there is no register to check a provider against before hiring. Under the Privacy Act 2020 your business is the agency responsible for any personal information it holds, even if an IT provider caused the breach. If the breach has caused or is likely to cause serious harm, sections 114 and 115 require you to notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and each affected person as soon as practicable, with the Commissioner asking for notification ideally within 72 hours through its NotifyUs tool at privacy.org.nz; failing to notify without reasonable excuse is an offence carrying a fine of up to $10,000 under section 118. Whether your provider is liable to you for causing the breach depends entirely on your contract, so read the liability, backup, data-location and breach-notification clauses before signing, and check that the baseline protections recommended by the National Cyber Security Centre, which absorbed CERT NZ in July 2024 and runs the Own Your Online programme for small businesses, are actually in place: two-factor authentication on every account, tested backups, software updates and a written incident plan.
Should a small business choose managed IT services or pay-as-you-go support? expand_more
Break-fix suits a business with a handful of staff using laptops and cloud software and no server, where months can pass without a serious fault, but its weakness is that nothing is monitored and a failure lands at the worst possible moment. A managed plan suits any business that cannot afford downtime, runs a server or specialist line-of-business software, or needs someone accountable for security and backups, because the provider is paid to prevent problems rather than to fix them. Reviewers found managed providers most valuable when they root-caused recurring faults rather than patching the same issue repeatedly, and when support tickets received a same-day remote resolution rather than a scheduled visit. Whichever model you choose, your business must own its Microsoft 365 tenancy, domain name and administrator accounts, with the provider holding only delegated access, and the contract must spell out the minimum term, notice period and what happens to your data and credentials when you leave.
What are the warning signs of an IT support company you should not use? expand_more
- –A provider that quotes a price verbally then bills for hours or costs that were never agreed to in writing before work started.
- –The same fault recurring across multiple visits because nobody investigated the root cause, only the symptom each time.
- –Domain names, Microsoft 365 tenancies or administrator passwords registered in the provider's name, which gives them leverage when you try to leave.
- –Backups that were never restored as a test, discovered only when a recovery was actually needed.
- –Tickets that go unanswered for days with no acknowledgement, or a different technician each time who starts the diagnosis from scratch.
- –Pressure to replace hardware or upgrade licences on every visit, with no clear explanation of why the existing setup is insufficient.
What should you ask before hiring an IT support company? expand_more
- –What is the guaranteed response time for a system-down emergency, and what is the target for a routine request, and what happens if those targets are missed?
- –Exactly what does the monthly fee cover, and what is billed separately, including on-site visits, after-hours calls, projects and hardware?
- –Who will hold the administrator accounts for Microsoft 365, your domain name and any other licences, and can those be transferred to you immediately if you leave?
- –How often are backups restored as an actual test, and can you see a recent test result before signing?
- –Is two-factor authentication switched on for every account in your environment, and how is that enforced and monitored?
- –Do you support other businesses of our size and using our specific software, and can you provide a reference from one of them?

Why isn't my business listed? expand_more
We build this page from Google Maps results for IT support companies on the North Shore.
