Before you hire

Most phone repair shops fix iPhones and Samsungs while you wait, and the price depends mostly on the part. Ask whether the quote is for a genuine screen or a compatible one, and whether the phone keeps its water resistance afterwards. Back up the phone first, ask the shop what to switch off before you hand it over, and ask what warranty the repair carries. A repair is covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act, which requires it to be done with reasonable care and skill.

What decides the price of a phone repair?

The part being replaced drives the price more than anything else: a screen costs more than a battery, and a charging port costs less than a back glass. The model and age of the phone matter too, because parts for newer or premium devices cost more than parts for older ones.

On many phones an OLED screen costs noticeably more than an LCD screen, so ask which type your model uses before accepting a quote. Apple publishes out-of-warranty cost estimates at support.apple.com/en-nz/iphone/repair and Samsung has a repair cost estimator at samsung.com/nz/support/galaxy-phone-screen-repair, but independent shops set their own prices, so always ask for the full price including the part before any work begins.

Genuine or compatible parts, and what protects you if a repair goes wrong?

A genuine part comes from the original manufacturer, while a compatible part is made by a third party and may differ in brightness, colour accuracy, or longevity, as reviews here show can cause problems with screen protectors not fitting flush or screens failing early. On an iPhone running iOS 15.2 or later you can check under Settings, General, About, Parts and Service History, where a replaced part will show as Genuine or Unknown, and an Unknown part can reduce your phone's trade-in value.

Apple and Samsung each authorise certain repairers to use their genuine parts, but a shop without that authorisation is not automatically worse, and for a phone still under manufacturer warranty you should use an authorised repairer to protect that cover. Phone repair is not a licensed trade in New Zealand, so your main legal protection is the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, which requires any repair to be carried out with reasonable care and skill and any parts supplied to be of acceptable quality; a written workmanship warranty from the shop adds a further layer on top of that.

Will my phone stay waterproof and my data safe after a repair?

Opening a phone to replace a part can reduce its water resistance, so ask the repairer directly whether they replace the seals and whether resistance is restored after the job, because no honest shop can guarantee the original rating. Back up your phone before handing it over, and if you have an iPhone on older software turn off Find My as Apple may not be able to service the device otherwise; from iOS 27 you can use the Ready for Repair setting instead, while Samsung users should switch on maintenance mode, which limits access to personal data during the repair. Ask the shop whether they need your passcode, who will physically handle the device, and what their policy is if data is lost during the repair.

What are the warning signs of a phone repair shop you should not use?
  • –A quote that rises once the phone is already open and disassembled, leaving you with little choice but to pay.
  • –A staff member who cannot or will not tell you whether the replacement part is genuine or a compatible third-party part.
  • –A shop that sells a compatible screen at a genuine-part price, as reported in reviews here.
  • –Touch faults, washed-out colour, or Face ID stopping work immediately after a screen replacement, which points to a low-quality part or poor installation.
  • –No written warranty on either the part or the labour, or a refusal to provide one when asked.
  • –A phone held for days beyond a same-day promise, with no proactive communication and no record kept of the job or payment details.
What should you ask before booking a phone repair?
  • –Is the quoted price the total price, including the part, or can it change once the phone is opened?
  • –Is the replacement part genuine manufacturer stock or a compatible third-party part, and will that show under Parts and Service History on an iPhone?
  • –How long will the repair take, and what happens if it runs over that time?
  • –What warranty covers the part and the workmanship, and is that warranty given to you in writing?
  • –Will the phone keep its water resistance rating after the repair, and do they replace the seals?
  • –Do you need the passcode to carry out the repair, and if so, who handles the device and what data access does that give them?

How are the top phone repair shops on the North Shore chosen?

We build this page from Google Maps results for phone repair shops on the North Shore. Each one is scored on its public rating and review record, using the same published method on every page. Businesses outside the area, or whose reviews describe a different line of work, are left out. Every category and city is rechecked on a rolling cycle, about every two to three months. See how we rank for how rankings are made and who is left out. On specialist pages like this one, a business's reviews count in proportion to how many of them are about phone repair shops, so a business mostly reviewed for other work cannot win on review volume alone. See the words we look for.

Are you a phone repair shop on the North Shore?

No business can pay for a place in these rankings. Claiming and verifying your listing is free: it adds a small trust bonus (+3 points) to your score, for confirming a real operator stands behind the listing, and gives you a dashboard showing how your score is made up. A paid subscription adds a website link, a profile page and your ranking history. Claim your listing or see what a subscription includes.

Not listed? The usual reasons are a Google Business category that does not match, too few reviews to score near the top, or an address outside the area we cover. Check where you rank first, and if you think we missed you, get in touch.
