How much does double glazing or a glass repair cost in New Zealand?

Retrofit double glazing, where a sealed unit replaces the single pane in the existing frame, runs from about $600 to $800 per square metre of glass, or $400 to $850 per window in aluminium frames and $800 to $1,200 per window in timber frames. A whole-home retrofit sits between roughly $12,000 and $25,000, while a 1990s house with ten aluminium windows comes in closer to $5,000 to $8,500 installed.

Full window replacement, new frames and all, starts at $25,000 and can reach $80,000 or more, making retrofit roughly 30 to 60 percent cheaper where the frames are sound. For a broken single pane in an aluminium frame near ground level, expect to pay around $320 plus GST on average, within a range of $200 to $800 plus GST, with timber frames and double-glazed units costing more.

Frame type and condition, the glass specified (Low-E coating, argon fill, laminated, acoustic or safety glass), window size and shape, the number of windows, travel distance, and height all move the final price. Access above ground-floor level can require scaffolding, which adds substantially to the cost. These are installer-published figures and no independent New Zealand source publishes glazing prices.

Is double glazing required by law, and does replacing windows need a building consent?

Nothing in New Zealand law requires an existing home to be double glazed. Building Code clause H1 sets a minimum window insulation value only for new housing (R0.37 nationwide from 3 November 2022, rising to R0.46 or R0.50 in the coldest climate zones during 2023), and an alteration to an existing house only has to leave it no worse than before.

The healthy homes standards for rental properties require ceiling and underfloor insulation, not double glazing, and the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme funds insulation and heat pumps, not windows. Under Schedule 1 of the Building Act 2004, replacing a window in an existing house of up to two storeys is exempt from building consent, unless the old window failed the code for durability (for example, it leaked) or the work affects a specified system, and exempt work must still meet the Building Code.

Glass in showers, doors, balustrades and similar risk areas must be safety glass, identifiable by a permanent NZS 4223.3 compliance mark. There is no licence or registration scheme for glaziers in New Zealand, but the Window & Glass Association New Zealand is the voluntary industry body and publishes a member search you can use to check whether an installer belongs.

Should you retrofit double glazing into your existing frames or replace the whole window?

Retrofit is the right call when your frames are structurally sound, because it replaces only the glass, leaves the join between the window and wall completely undisturbed, and costs substantially less than full replacement. Full replacement suits frames that are rotten, corroded, or draughty, and it is the only way to get thermally broken aluminium, uPVC or new timber frames, which insulate significantly better than old plain aluminium.
